What this website is.

After a twenty-five year break, I am starting to play Commodore 64 games again. Not on an emulator; on original hardware.

Although the physical hardware (console, REU, and various drives) work fine, certain concessions needed to be made to the passage of time. The console has had this S-video modification installed, and it is connected to an LCD via a Framemeister.

Floppy media is problematic, so I use the uIEC. I also have a 1541 Ultimate II, but in my opinion it isn’t ready for prime time, and thus I prefer the uIEC.

The uIEC is wonderful. It’s a fantastic substitute for a 1581 … and, from a gaming perspective, is about as 1541-compatible as was the 1581 …

… so therefore I am modifying my favorite games for use with the uIEC (and REU where feasible). Where possible, they can be run from a subdirectory rather than a d64 image. I am posting the games here, so that others can benefit from my work.

(Why am I not simply using old cracked (“scene”) images? Personal preference, really. I’m trying to recapture the original gaming experience. Cracker-group intro scenes that brag about their elite cracking skills, with shout-outs to people who probably never really existed, all set to loud and jarring euro-techno-music … well, that wasn’t part of my original gaming experience)

(and, since it appears that I’m essentially cracking Commodore copy-protection again, I’ll put in this warning for nostalgia purposes: “CC Fox, do NOT hex-edit these to put your name on the splash screen. You didn’t crack it, so don’t take credit for work that isn’t yours. Your dad wants to know why you skipped school yesterday, by the way”)
